It’s Getting Scot In Here Review

Hello,

I am so excited to talk about a book that I recently read and whose family I would love to be a part of! I was kindly sent a digital galley of It’s Getting Scot In Here by Suzanne Enoch though all thoughts are my own and not influenced by receiving a copy. So let’s get to the more exciting part!

From the moment that I heard about this book, I knew that I wanted it in my hands and would enjoy it because where can a gal can’t go wrong reading about Highlanders in Kilts and a young woman who is so much more than some people give her credit for.

This is the first book in the Wild Wicked Highlanders involving three Highland brothers who find themselves having to journey to London to marry a woman of their Mother’s choosing in order to save their beloved Scottish home Aldriss Park which has been in the MacTaggert family for over two hundred years. Their father Angus traveled from the Highlands to London to find a bride to help support his estate and he met Francesca Oswell who was the only daughter of James and Mary Oswell, Viscount and Viscountess of Hornford and had more than plenty of money. She fell in love with the Highlander and within a fortnight she was married and whisked off to the Highlands. Her parents were rather unconventionally as they left her inheritance in Francesca’s name and that resulted in several fights with Angus when he found out.

Over the next thirteen years there were many turbulent moments and Francesca’s life was very busy with having three sons- Coll, Aden, Niall. She expressed more than once how she wished to take the boys back to England so they could have proper educations and be among a society that she very much enjoyed but her husband wouldn’t hear of it. When she later bore a daughter named Eloise, Francesca was determined to raise her in London and allow for her to have much better chances in husband material. Angus refused to let his sons go with her but he did allow his daughter and wife to go under the condition that money would still be sent to help maintain the estate.

Francesca agreed with the understanding that when the boys are of age they have to marry before their sister does, one of them has to marry someone of her choosing and they all have to marry Englishwomen. If they don’t, then all the money would be cut off to help maintain Aldriss Park. Angus reluctantly agreed though he was a wily fellow and chose not to inform his boys of this agreement until seventeen years later when they receive word about it through that post that their little sister is to be married.

Determined to keep their home afloat, the boys reluctantly journey to London to see their Mother who they hadn’t spoken to in seventeen years and their nearly grown sister who was only six months old when last they saw her. The boys are understandably upset in particular Coll who was twelve when his Mother left and is annoyed that he’s drawn the short straw so to speak in being the first to have to marry. The boys grew up rather Wild and fierce in the Highlands where society is much more different than London and they are not a group that you would want to cross. They have become close over the years, very smart, handsome and hope to find a way out of this contract that their parents have.

Amelia-Rose Baxter is the only daughter of a family that is not of the nobility but is well off. Her mother is eager to marry her off to a gentleman with a title though Amelia has only been out for two seasons and has received several proposals. Amelia-Rose is a smart young woman who finds it hard to hold her tongue, loves being among society, reading, having a good time and is often frustrated with her Mother who demands a lot of her. She’s shocked when she learns that an engagement has been agreed to between her parents and Lady Aldriss’s eldest son Coll. She hasn’t heard very many good things about Highlanders and the thought of having to leave what she’s known for the wilds of Scotland is a frightening prospect though she is rather desperate to get out from under the thumb of her overbearing Mother. Amelia has no idea what she’s getting herself into but is determined to try to make the best of things. Her first meeting with Coll involves the temperamental Highlander being rather rude and stomping out of a public play when Amelia puts him in his place for being rude. Niall proceeds to step in to save the day so to speak and keeps Amelia from being embarrassed and that’s when things really start getting interesting.

Niall has always been the peacemaker of the family. He’s the one that people come to with their troubles and has often kept his brothers from getting into too much trouble. He’s had his fair share of wild moments, chasing Highland lasses, a few scuffles and is not happy about the edict that his parents have decided on. He realizes though that Amelia didn’t have much say in the agreement and finds himself drawn to the woman as he repeatedly tries to cover Coll’s butt for being absent. What starts out as trying to keep the peace between Coll and Amelia turns into much more than he had anticipated. Niall finds himself drawn to the blonde-haired woman who is funny, has a sharp tongue, well-spoken, sweet and full of surprises.

When he learns this his brother Coll was a jerk on purpose and trying to get Amelia to break off the engagement by being so harsh, he gives his brother a good wallop. Which was a huge plus in my eyes because Coll needed a sound thrashing for being so petty. I thought it might be rather awkward when it comes out that Niall wants to pursue Amelia but it was rather sweet and his family was fully ready to back him, including his Mom.

Amelia realizes that she is falling for the handsome rugged Niall  who is equal parts funny, gentlemanly, sweet, loyal and one of her dearest confidants. She faces an uphill battle trying to convince her parents to agree to allow Niall to court her though she has an unlikely ally in the form of her cousin Jane who has been her companion for the last seven years. Amelia manages to sneak away a few times to see Niall who proceeds to woo her in his own way and show her a glimpse of the life she could lead being his wife. She is a tad reluctant because she would like to not live far from the London area and not have to spend all of her days in the Highlands.

Just when things are slowly starting to go well and there’s a chance that Amelia and Niall could be together, her scheming Mother throws a monkey wrench in the works that could cause all of their plans to be tossed out the window.

Amelia will have to make a choice as to whether she wants to continue to be what her parents and society expect of her, including accepting a proposal from a different man or take a leap of faith and follow her heart to be with the man who encourages to be herself while knowing that she may not be able to have everything she thinks she desires.

This book was such a pleasure to get lost in. Suzanne has a way of drawing me into the story line and not wanting to stop until the end. I loved the humor, the closeness of the brothers, their Mom who is a formidable force and fiercely protective of her grown children, the adventures and the surprises that I wasn’t expecting.

There were several steamy scenes which I didn’t mind because this is a romance book after all and they were very well done. I really liked the fact that this book was about romance but mostly a development of that romance and not purely about the steamy scenes.

I loved getting to know the MacTaggerts who may be a bit on the wild side but are fiercely loyal and full of rather funny antics. The boys have had their fair share of scrapes, close calls and fights but they are a united front and will protect those under their care. I loved seeing the boys slowly start to thaw in their feelings towards their Mom. It’s understandable why they would be hesitant due to the circumstances but I think they are slowly starting to see that their Mom was between a rock and a hard place several years ago.

I did not think kindly of Coll for being such a jerk just to get out of marrying someone that his Mother chose for him. He did redeem himself though when he later apologized to Amelia was there to help his little brother marry her and he seems to be a decent big brother to Eloise.

I could continue to go on gushing about this book but I don’t want to give too much away and I hope my thoughts have piqued your interest. I can’t wait until the next book is released and to see which brother will fall in love. I also can’t wait to see what adventures are in store for the MacTaggert brothers. Lastly, I really hope that Jane might still have a chance at her own happily ever after because she really is a sweetheart!

Thank you so much for dropping by and I hope that you’ve enjoyed my ramblings. Now I am off on more reading adventures and to eagerly wait to hear news about when the next book in the series will be available for me to get my hands on.

Happy Reading!
