Happy Wednesday,
January seems to have just flown by and here it is the middle of February which also seems to be flying. I’ve been doing a lot of reading the last couple of months which has been great especially on cold nights when I can curl up with my books and get lost in stories.
I am trying to be better about posting reviews on more than just my Goodreads page so thought I would touch on what I’ve read so far as well as what I am currently in the middle of. I am hopeful that I can stay on track and get to most of my TBR, also I really need to get a handle on figuring out just how many physical books I own. I’ve recently unboxed most of the books that I had in boxes when I moved last year and am looking forward to getting at least a couple of bookshelves. I will try to remember to take pics of the before and after part. I am also still planning to do a haul of the books that I bought this past weekend, also I may have gone a tad overboard on my Library’s book sale.
So enough of my ramblings, here are my reviews of books that I’ve read so far this month.
My Thoughts:
This book opens with quite the statement and I found myself caught up in this book from beginning to end.
Dina is an Inn Keeper who has found herself in charge of a house that has magic and having one guest who keeps her on her toes. It’s not long before she has a couple of unexpected guests who have their own secrets which may very well put Dina and her other guest in danger.
I really enjoyed this book, particularly the Inn itself and Dina’s dog who is full of her own surprises. which is hard to not like and I love that it was the kind of urban fantasy that takes place in the modern world. Looking forward to continuing on with the series.
Trigger warnings: violence, death, missing family
My Thoughts:
The beginning of this book was heartbreaking and I wanted to kick Antsy’s step-dad to the curb the moment he made her feel uneasy. My heart ached for Antsy and how she was forced to grow up along with having to witness her Dad dying.
I’m so glad that she got free of her step-Dad but also angry that she didn’t feel safe nor that she could trust that her Mom would take her side.
I did enjoy the rest of the book once Antsy was free of that terrible situation and how she was able to find a new home for a while after going through a Door.
The author does foreworn about the possible triggers in this book which I appreciated and recommend reading before starting the book.
Overall, it was another fascinating edition to the series and and it’s full of surprises.
Trigger warnings: grooming, gaslighting, adult manipulation of a child
My Thoughts:
This was such a fun short read. It was full of steaminess, some corniness and love nearly at first sight. I highly recommend this book particularly if you’re looking for a short steamy read.
Ella and Gunnar are adorable and I love the glimpses of Gunnar’s family particularly towards the end when they are so quick to help clean up after a big meal.
Looking forward to continuing on with the series and I love that Evie is a plus size woman who has embraced her curves!
Trigger warnings- an accident involving a beer can and a brief hospital stay
My Thoughts:
This book was amazing, heartbreaking, sweet and full of surprises. There is so much to unpack from this book and this is for sure one of my favorite books in the Shadowhunter world.
I love Cordelia, the Merry Thieves, Jem, Will, Tessa, Magnus and Anna, all of whom I hope will be just fine in the next book and am hoping that two certain characters will have to pay for all of the trouble and heartache that has happened.
Looking forward to continuing on with this series soon and can’t wait to see which cliffhangers will be resolved.
Trigger warnings: death, murder, some violence, abuse, alcoholism
My Thoughts:
This is the further adventures of Meghan, Ash, Puck, Nyx and the very reluctant Grim.
There is a lot that is revealed in this book that really threw me for a loop and I couldn’t wait to find out how things would play out. I love this group of fey who are full of surprises, have their own way of doing things and just in general work great as a team.
Julie really has a way with words and I found myself anxiously wanting to know what would happen next and whether the mysteries hinted at would be solved. My only complaint about this book is the kind of cliffhanger that it was left on though it’s not a bad thing and am so excited to see how things will go in the next book.
Trigger warnings: violence, death, imprisonment
My Thoughts:
I loved this book so much and highly recommend especially if you’re a fan of the Frozen movies and further exploring the world.
I loved the fact that Elsa and Anna were able to help figure out what the mystery was, right a wrong that was many years delayed and of course I loved getting to read about Sven, Olaf and Kristoff.
I am looking forward to reading more Frozen-inspired books.
Trigger warnings: death, someone is wrongly accused, other possible triggers
My Thoughts:
This was an interesting book and I found the premise compelling though I would say this is not one that has a lot of action apart from the murder in the beginning and the climax.
I would say my favorite aspect of this book was the magical cats who are so adorable, stubborn, have a dash of mischief and always seem to be one step ahead of everyone else.
Trigger warnings: death, some violence, a brief hostage situation
My Thoughts:
This has been a particular favorite of mine since first reading and continues to be a favorite.
I love the concept of two people finding each other even across hundreds of years and love finding a way despite such incredible odds.
I loved Dougless and Nicholas who are each wonderful, sweet, stubborn and full of surprises. Also, I love how things end which is adorable and melts my heart!
I will say that I was uncomfortable how a young girl was described with being plus size, a comment about her wearing a certain outfit and other references to people being plus size.
Trigger warnings: poverty, accidents, near drowning, mentions of infant death, imprisonment, beheading, death due to child birth
My Thoughts:
A fascinating read about the history and importance of Fens, Bogs and Swamps.
It was very eye opening as to just how important these areas of the world are and the preservation of them.
Many of these areas have been torn down to make way for the modern world which has affected the wildlife in the area and contributed to the climate crisis.
It was interesting to learn what role these areas have played throughout history including being burial grounds, a source of heat, contributing to the ecosystem and some of the items that have been found buried particularly in the bogs.
Highly recommend an am looking forward to reading more about these areas of the world!
